Secondary teachers vote to refuse appointment to Teaching Council
Members of PPTA Te Wehengarua, the secondary teachers’ union, have voted overwhelmingly in favour of boycotting appointment to the Teaching Council Governing Board.
Legislation passed recently by the Government removes all elected members from the Teaching Council. All members of the Teaching Council will now be appointed by the Minister of Education.
The result of this ballot means that any PPTA member offered a ministerial appointment must decline the appointment.
“PPTA members have shown they believe strongly in education sector representation on the teaching professional body,” says Chris Abercrombie, PPTA Te Wehengarua president.
“This representation must be chosen by the sector, not by a politician.”
The result of the ballot does not prohibit PPTA members from seeking appointment to the Disciplinary Tribunal, the Complaints Assessment Committee, or similar conduct or competency bodies.
PPTA Field Officers and lawyers employed by PPTA will continue to represent members through the discipline and competence processes of the Council.
