Canterbury earthquake - advice for teachers

Message to PPTA members in Canterbury

E-mail

ChristchurchA message, from New Zealand Post Primary Teachers' Association / Te Wehengarua (PPTA) president Robin Duff, to PPTA members working and living in Canterbury.

Dear PPTA Canterbury Members

The education renewal announcements made last Thursday by Minister of Education Hekia Parata and Secretary for Education Lesley Longstone have caused wide-spread confusion and anger across Canterbury.

PPTA has a preference for working with the Ministry and Government over education renewal plans in greater Christchurch, but the announcements made last Thursday 13th September bear no resemblance to what was discussed during the consultation phase.

PPTA has called on Minister Parata to apologise and asked the Ministry to explain their on-going mixed messages to the education sector.

The MoE's press release - Christchurch schools announcement - clarification

(couldn't find online at time of posting - so in the interests of transparency)

No firm proposals for Christchurch high schools

There are no firm proposals to merge or close Christchurch high schools, the Ministry of Education confirmed today.

The ministry is unable to make proposals on those schools until further geotechnical information is available which is not expected before next year.

More technical information is needed before any final decisions are taken on the future of high schools.

We will continue to work with engineers, schools and others, to ensure plans for a modern, sustainable school network are developed.

The ministry apologises if any information made available today was unclear regarding Christchurch high schools.

Notes for editors

This media advisory has been issued in relation to a summary of renewal proposals document given to reporters at today’s media briefing in Christchurch.

Regrettably, this information was not clear and potentially misleading.
